An Irish Car Bombs is a popular bar drink served in many English and Irish pubs in North America. The drink was invented in Connecticut by most accounts and has gained in popularity since the 1970’s when first served.
Originally, the Irish Car Bomb was served in two separate pieces- the beer and the shot. Over time, the shot was placed in the beer as much for ease of cleaning the shot glass afterward as anything else.
An Irish Car Bomb consists of three quarters of a pint of Guinness stout, a half ounce of Bailey’s Irish Cream and a half ounce of Jameson’s Irish Whiskey. The name comes from both the fact that all of the ingredients are Irish and that the shot bubbles up like a bomb. The name references the Irish Republican Army’s attack campaigns in the 1970’s which consisted mostly of car bombings.
To make an Irish Car Bomb, first pour three quarters of a pint of Guinness into a clean pint size beer sleeve. If you pour more, there will not be enough room for the other ingredients. The head should be no thicker than a half inch so that it does not interfere with the quick drinking of the beverage. The Guinness should be served at perfect stout temperature- between 41 and 48 degrees Fahrenheit. Serving stout colder than that dampens the rich taste of the barley and the hops. Serving it warmer makes it less refreshing.
In a shot glass, pour a half ounce of Bailey’s Irish Cream. Add to that a half ounce of Jameson’s Irish Whiskey. The Bailey’s must go in first. If the Irish Whiskey is added first, the Bailey’s will float on top and the two will not come together properly.
When ready to serve, hold the shot glass with the thumb and middle finger holding on to the rim of the glass. Gently drop the shot glass into the Guinness. The mixture will immediately begin frothing and bubbling and the drink should be consumed in one long swig. In many bars, “races” are held to see who can down the Irish Car Bomb the fastest.
